This month marks many milestones for businesses.  It’s the end of another year, the time to start making resolutions and goals for 2016 and a time of reflection.

This week, I am choosing to reflect upon one of my clients whom I’m so very proud of, Michael Ortiz owner of Massage Customs.

Michael and I began working together in January and from the very beginning there was no doubt in my mind he was destined to do great things.  He’s not only the owner of Massage Customs who oversees 5 employees, he’s also a very talented massage therapist.

Over the past 12 months, he has worked tirelessly to reach and then surpass his business goals.  I’m so impressed by all of his successes and I’m excited to share his story with all of you.

Massage Customs is nearly 3 years old, why did you decide this year to hire a business coach?

“I always knew I wanted to work for myself and that when I did I would need a business coach.  I met a few and just never clicked with them.  Then I met Dana and knew she was the coach for me.”

How has working with Dana changed the way you run your business?

“She has kept me on track with my goals and holds me accountable.  We strategize on ways to increase my revenues and she puts me in contact with the right people.  I’m not the most organized or detail-oriented person, but she is.  She also highlights my areas of weakness and opportunity so I know exactly where to focus efforts.”

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned or taken away over this past year?

“The importance of systems, processes and operations in general.  She helped change the way we do things, making us more efficient.  Before I was just winging it, and now I’m more focused.  If I hadn’t found Dana I would probably be half as productive as I am now.  There’s something about that weekly phone call with Dana that puts a fire under your butt to get things done.”

“Self-improvement is big too.  Dana talks a lot about that and I think reading a lot has helped me get where I am today.  I want to make myself a better leader so I can take my business to the next level.  Having a family really takes that mindset to the next level, it’s not just my success, it’s about the survival of my family.”

Did you achieve your goals for this year?  What is in store for Massage Customs in 2016?

“We are so close right now.  I made some pretty big goals, but that’s what I do.  Whenever I reach a goal I always think I should’ve made it bigger and better.  There is always room for improvement.  Next year I’ve got some huge goals.  To get there, I’m going to have to push myself and work harder than ever.  I know it’s possible though because we’re more capable than ever.”

What makes Massage Customs different?

“I believe pain is a symptom of not taking care of yourself.  People tend to put everyone else first and themselves last.  I want to show people that when they put themselves first (even if just for an hour) they can improve every other aspect of their life.  I and the 4 other massage therapists listen to our clients very well.  If they want their neck worked on, then that’s what we do.  Every client has different needs.”

5 Ways Gratitude Can Increase Your Business

We’re coming up on the busiest time of year… between holiday shopping and tying up end-of-year business, all of our plates are full.

I want to take this time however to remind you to stop and give thanks.  Not just in the traditional sense, rather to really sit down and take a moment to think about all of those who have made 2015 what it is for you.

There’s no better time than the season of giving to do this since it’s at the top of most people’s minds.  Plus, having an attitude of gratitude is good for the soul, as well as your business.

By now you know my motto:  Serve More. Earn More. Enjoy More!, and gratitude can help you better achieve all three of those things!  Here are five ways your  business can grow by simply showing a little thankfulness.

1. Personal Appreciation

A small handwritten thank you note can go a long way.  In this day of “shoot from the hip” text messages or emails, a personalized piece of snail mail is such a nice touch.  I’m sure you could even name the last person who sent you a written card/note.  Throw in a gift card or coupon for your services and you’re doing even better!

It leaves a wonderful lasting impression of thoughtfulness and creates loyalty.  The cost of stationary and stamps will prove to be minuscule when you see an increase in your profits and repeat business from satisfied customers/clients.

2. Bookend Your Thanks

This is a wonderful habit to get into.  Start and end each conversation, meeting, event by showing your gratitude.  Thank the person or group for their time, expertise, purchase (whatever the case may be) and end with another round of thanks.

This even goes for complaints, acknowledge them and thank the person for bringing the particular issue to your attention so that you have the opportunity to prevent it from happening again in the future.  Turn a negative into a positive with your gratitude; in the end this could prevent you from having larger problems and shows the person your true professionalism.

3. Pay It Forward

Be the conductor of the good karma train by showing your appreciation and others will follow suit.  I absolutely love the “Pay it Forward” mentality, and only wish more people adopted this thinking.

When others see your gratitude, compassion, humility, and expression of thanks, they will be inspired to do the same.  Then you’ll be top of mind to them, and when they (or someone they know) are in need of your products/services who are they going to call?  The conductor of that feel good karma train, YOU, that’s who!

4. Walk the Talk

Show your true leadership skills by giving thanks to those who help you on a daily basis, your team members, friends, family, clients and fellow colleagues.  By encouraging them and showing your humble gratitude for all they do, you’ll see an increase in performance and loyalty (retention).

Because, who doesn’t want to work for and with someone who is thankful and happy with their work?!  This will in turn inspire them to do number four on our list… pay it forward.

5. Live with Intention

This is something I write about a lot on my blog and that’s because of its overall importance in your personal and business life.  Living with intention is essentially a lifestyle of gratefulness, being of service and focus.

If you concentrate on the things you do not have, than how can you expect to attract the things you want?  Be happy and thankful for what you have and you’ll be living a happier more fulfilled life.  And when you’re happier you are able to connect better with others and create lasting relationships, both personally and in business.

3 Ways to Keep Your Business Spark Alive

Running a business is rewarding and, it can also be exhausting.

Whether you’re trying to keep up with the latest technology to motivating team members, it’s a mammoth task, and somebody’s gotta do it!

So how do you keep that entrepreneurial spirit alive?

Think of your business relationship as a life-long commitment through the high’s, low’s, droughts, floods, feast and famine.

Here are three tips on ways to keep that business spark of yours alive and thriving…

1. Be an Inspiration

Make a difference, get involved with your community.  It makes you a valuable member and someone people look up to.  Remember, you’re a human being first and a business person second.  Becoming a person that others look to for inspiration helps keep you on the track to living an authentic life as well.

Become a “brand” that people simply can not forget.  The easiest way to do that is through positivity and inspiration.  Knowing that your business is making a difference (to a charity, person, business or local community) will keep you motivated to do what you do best, because doing good makes you feel good.

Also, look to mentors or other business owners you admire to see what they’re doing.  Ask yourself, “why do they inspire me?”  The answer can instill new ideas for your own business.

2. Create a Plan of Action

Date night is important to keeping your relationship healthy in marriage right?  Same goes for regularly scheduled “dates” with your business.  Create a plan of action, one that will fuel your business to keep growing.

Growth in itself will keep your spirit and spark alive because, think about it… who DOESN’T want to see steady growth and profits?!

A plan of action should include your SMART goals (both long and short term) and specific times when you assess those goals.  By keeping track of your successes and actions, you’ll be better equipped to make appropriate business decisions.

3. Respect Your Business

Honor and respect your business just as you would your partner.  Expect there to be ups and downs over the course of your relationship.  Your ability to weather those storms will only make your business stronger in the end.

Why You Need a No-Way or Not-Anymore List

Not Anymore listTake a look around your office or desk and I’m sure you’ll find a few to-do lists.  Most of us scribble down tasks we need/want to accomplish in an effort to organize our thoughts and goals.

I’m going to throw a wrench into that idea now… have you ever thought about making a “no way” or “not-anymore list?”

Most successful and high-achieving people have habits but also definitely have a good filtering process.  Having a no-way or not-anymore list helps keep you focused on the most important tasks and filter out the less important ones.

Here are a few things that should go on your “No-Way” or Not-Anymore-List” TODAY!

1. Setting up Meetings

We’ve all been guilty of this at one point or another… setting up meetings simply for the fact of setting up a meeting.  There’s no clear goal or agenda in mind, you’re just getting together for the sake of having a meeting.

2. Doing Everything

We’ve talked about delegating tasks and jobs to other members of your team before.  This is an area that is so important and should absolutely be on this list.  Don’t try to do it all by yourself as this is the quickest way to burnout, inefficiency and the slowest way to growing revenues.  Only take on those crucial activities that you do best!

3. Answering all Messages

It’s so easy to get bogged down with hundreds of emails, voicemails and texts throughout the day.  Don’t stress over answering them all immediately.  We have some how convinced ourselves that we need to reply to emails instantly and that’s just not the case.

For increased efficiency, I recommend that you set-aside 2-3 times each day (Monday-Friday or your standard operating business days) to check and/or respond to emails.  This puts you in a routine and creates a good habit.

I’ve even seen some professionals utilize an email autoresponder effectively that lets email senders know what times during the day they will be checking emails and if a response is needed prior to then, to please call their assistant or cell phone directly.  

4. People Pleasing

The only person you should be making sure is happy is yourself.  Yes, you want your clients to be pleased with the service they receive and as long as you are delivering on what has been sold, you should rest easy.

Don’t spend time with people you don’t trust or you can’t count on just because you feel obligated.  This only wastes your time, can often be felt by the other person.

5. Perpetually Problem Solving

Pick and choose your battles.  Not every problem can be solved and rectified.  If the problem is something you can control, than by all means, do what you can to solve it.  If, however, it is something you are not able to control or influence, my recommendation is to let it go and instead focus your intentions where you do have influence and can control the outcome.

6.  Worrying

If something is beyond your control do not, and I repeat do not waste your precious time worrying about it.  Don’t get hung up over details.

Agonizing over mistakes that were made or missed opportunities will only have you dwelling on the past instead of looking ahead to the future.  Afterall, worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles, it takes away today’s peace.

How Intention Will Bring Success To You in 2016

Intention in 2016Last week we discussed the power of intent and how it can transform your thoughts into tangible success.

Today I’m going to take things a step further and show you how to use the power of intent to finish out 2015 with a bang (and start the new year off right).  Take notes if you feel so inclined, this is going to be some great information to use over and over again!

The key to a balanced life is intention.

We already know that setting intentions will transform your life and business so let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

Who should set intentions?

Every.  Single. Person. Well, except those people who don’t want to see results or live life to its fullest potential.

When do I set intentions?

Great question!  And the answer is simple: all the time!  Before you head into a a big meeting, take calls with clients, make dinner, spend time with friends or family, whatever task you’re about to embark on.

Don’t just set intentions for your big picture dreams, use them everyday.  Nothing is too trivial, because all of those small intentions act as stepping stones toward the big important “things” in your business and overall life.

Practice makes perfect right?  So with all that warming up you’ll be an intentional machine in no time.

What do I do?

First, take a few deep breathes and ask yourself these three important questions:

  1. Who do I want to be right now in this moment?
  2. How do I want to feel?
  3. What is the perfect/ideal/most amazing outcome or result that I want?

Remember intentions are flexible and adaptable.  They are built to last, unlike a goal which is something that can be completed/finished and easily derailed by unforeseen circumstances.

Using the power of intent in your business and everyday life WILL cultivate success and its scientifically proven.

The 2007 book, The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart, explores the actual science behind the power of intent.  Her in-depth research clearly demonstrates an undeniable fact: thought is a thing that affects other things.  Mactaggart pulled together decades of research conducted at laboratories and universities including Princeton, MIT and Stanford.

“Intention is a directed thought, a thought aimed at something or someone with the goal of influencing something physical.  It is using your consciousness to change something in physical reality.  Intention manifests itself as electrostatic and magnetic energy.  Thoughts are ‘things’ too.”

I’ll leave you with this invitation to be intentional about one small thing today.  Simply shift your thinking.  Decide who you want to be, what you want to create or accomplish and how you want to feel in a situation.  Your result are in your hands – its that simple!

The Power of Intent & 3 Ways to Harness It

As children we are often told “you can do or be anything, just put your mind to it.

Intent has always been a part of our lives, hiding in the background, waiting patiently for us to take notice.  Well now is that time.

You could go so far as to argue that intent is the first step to success in business AND truly all aspects of life.

Are you ready to start harnessing the power of intent?

First, let’s go over the difference between goals and intentions.

When you set a goal, it tends to be more rigid, a process that involves a lot of planning, analyzing and reasoning.  We are in total control of the plan and all of the steps leading up to the ultimate goal.

Intentions are similar to goals, only there is no plan.  Scary right?  At first, maybe, but in all actuality, the power of intent is profound (and a little esoteric to many).  You simply intend an outcome, almost like making a wish.  It is based upon the Law of Attraction, which in theory allows you to manifest fuller, more robust outcomes than a goal can.

Goals may or may not be good for you but intentions are always good for you.

The Universe unfolds the journey for a person who has clear and connected intentions and presents them with appropriate opportunities.  A person with intentions may take detours but they do manifest intentions.  A person with a goal can get myopic and may lose opportunities as a result of their tunnel vision.

This may sound easy but the biggest challenge for many people is figuring out exactly what it is they want.  Clarifying your intentions will unlock that.  Here’s 3 easy ways to harness your own personal power of intent.

1. Identify Your True Intention

Ask yourself (and be sure to answer honestly)…
How do I want to feel at this moment?
What do I want to create as a result of my actions?
What is the final outcome I want to see?

Is your intention to truly be conscious of the environment or to just look green?
Is your intention to start a business or just talk about it?
Is your intention to help someone in need or appear to be a hero in the eyes of others?

2. Align Your Intentions With Your Actions

Once you’ve identified your intention you then need to take action.  Is what you’re doing in line with what you’re intending/saying?

Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk.  When you’re clear on your intention, you will take inspired action as a result.

3. Focus, Focus, Focus

So by now in this little exercise have figured out your intention in this moment.  Identify the specific ways you need to be acting, the words you should be using in order to manifest your intention.

Ask yourself…
What actions are appropriate for my intention?
When I fully embody my intention, what will that feel like?
How will others respond/react?

Revert back to your childhood for a moment and truly believe in yourself.  For the power of intention can propel you toward success in a way nothing else can.

I now challenge you to set an intention for the day and pair that with inspired action.

5 Simple Steps to Creating A Great Mission Statement

For many the Mission Statement is a thorn in their side… a necessary evil that just comes with the territory when launching a business.

We all understand the importance of a first impression and in its simplest form that’s exactly what a mission statement is. The initial opportunity for you to put your best foot forward, as it helps to define goals, ethics and overall company culture. The key is to find that balance between realism and optimism.

The last thing you want is a generic mission statement full of fluffy words that would work for any business under the sun.  So to help, I’ve broken down the daunting process into a simple 5-step plan. Simply grab a pen and paper and get to it.

1. Write down three words that describe your company.

Do you want people to associate you with words like creative, trailblazing and vibrant?  Maybe traditional, dependable and trust-worthy? If you have a slogan that may be a good place to find appropriate words.

2. Who is your dream client and ideal customer?
Define your target audience.

Just jot down the first few things that come to mind, we’ll worry about adding finesse to everything later.

3.  What sets you apart from your competitors? What makes your business special and different?

Keep this to one or two sentences. If you’re having trouble with this question, then take a fresh look at your business plan.

4. What are your aspirations, and goals for the business?

Aim high and, make it achievable. A mission statement is supposed to point you in the right direction – straight to the top of the success ladder.

5. How does the existence of your company make the lives of others better?

Sounds scarier than it actually is. You don’t have to be putting and end to world hunger to make a difference. (Providing pain relief and stress reducing massages makes the world a better, happier place!)

Now that you’ve got all these ideas down on paper, craft it all together in a couple sentences NOT paragraphs. It should take no longer than 30 seconds to read. Get your employees’ opinions on whether or not it is representative of the company’s identity and culture.

Voila, you’ve got yourself a great mission statement. Remember as you grow and prosper you will need to update the mission statement, and that’s a good thing!

10 Ways to Stay Motivated During Trying Times

Purposefully infuse your life with a positive perspective and

motivation will never be in short supply.

When times are tough however, becoming discouraged is very easy to do.

I truly believe the old adage, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.”  I know how hard it can be to keep your head up at times, so I’ve compiled ten ways to stay motivated when things just don’t seem to be going your way.

1.  Take control over what you can and…

…stop worrying about and let go of what you can’t!  It’s so very easy to get caught up in those things that are out of your hands.  Learn to recognize the difference and get over the things you have no say over.  There’s no sense in dwelling on what you can’t change!  Devote your intentions and attention to more purposeful actions that will truly make a difference.

2.  Surround yourself with positivity

Negative people will only serve to bring you down.  Seek out the positive-thinkers who focus on the good and allow their positivity to influence you.  This will ensure a “can-do” attitude through trying times when you’re more apt to be pulled into thinking negatively.

3.  Speak positive affirmations

The most important asset I have is myself.  In an earlier blog post I asked you to repeat that affirmation.  Words can move mountains, so make sure you’re using the right ones.  Many experts, and I agree with them, say the act of talking out loud is helpful in reminding ourselves of the vision we have for our life and all the goals included in that vision.  Write down a positive affirmation and tape it up next to your bathroom mirror.  When you’re getting ready in the morning, repeat it out loud and start your day off on a positive note.

4.  Learn from your mistakes, don’t dwell on them

Mistakes are bound to be made.  If you see the error in your ways, GREAT!  That means you are learning and know what not to do the next time.  More importantly, don’t dwell on the negative, keep moving forward.

5.  Have a plan

Being proactive can save you precious time and even heartache when trying times find their way into your life.  When you take the time to plan, you’ve already done the hard part for yourself by organizing a process from beginning to end.  So if something turns up expectedly, you can problem solve more quickly.

6.  Celebrate milestones big and small

Did you…. land a large client?  Graduate with your Masters?  Drink eight glasses of water today?  No matter how large or small some accomplishments may seem, they are accomplishments nonetheless.  Take the time to pat yourself on the back for all of them!  This self-appreciation helps keep your motivation level sky high.

I go so far as to have my clients write down at the end of each day at least 3 things they can celebrate that they accomplished and/or created that day.  So often we are more focused on what we didn’t get accomplished, that we forget how important it is to celebrate and focus on what we did accomplish.  Action goes when energy flow – if you focus on the what didn’t happen, you’ll create more of what “didn’t happen”, focus on what you did accomplish and create, and you’ll soon be creating even more to celebrate!

7.  Build a support team

We get by with a little help from our friends (family and coworkers) right?  So use them to lean on when unexpected storm clouds roll in.  Not only will their advice propel you toward resolution, the companionship will be a great reminder that you’re not alone.

8.  Recount past victories

You’ve come along way baby, so remind yourself of that.  Back in the day you dreamed about being where you’re at this very moment.  Go back and look at any trophies, certificates or congratulatory items.  By recalling those victories you’ll spark a new sense of motivation you may have thought was temporarily lost.

9.  Expect greatness

This ties in with affirmations AND takes things to the next level.  Wake up and expect to have a great day.  Say it out loud,”Today something wonderful is going to happen to me!”  You will get what you expect.

10.  Fill your mind with inspiring information

Read or listen to anything you find makes you happy.  A boost in energy will give you the motivation to continue on your path even when times are tough.

In today’s TPT, Thought Provoking Tuesday, I want you to think about what you really want.

Not just in business and professionally speaking, really think about what you want in your entire life.

Some would call these your DREAMS or aspirations.  I want you to start referring to them as your GOALS instead.

Let’s take things a step further… ask yourself this question:

If I knew I couldn’t fail what would I do?

Does this question change your initial response about what you want in life?  I’m a firm believer that self-discovery and self-improvement is a catalyst for overall success.  And by inquiring about the future, you are showing a true commitment to yourself and your overall well-being.

Whenever doubt, fear or scarcity enters your mind – ask yourself “If I knew I couldn’t fail, what would I do?”  The goal is to find clarity in your answer and move forward as soon as possible.

Remember, you are capable of achieving more then you realize, and often more then you give yourself permission to believe you can.

Set goals.

Take action.
